January 5th, 2012:
Dr. Charles Williams, a founding member and inspiration for our work, passed away last week. Charlie and his family have been a lake family since 1948!
He liked to tell the story of how in the early days he would just keep a cup on the sailboat and when he got thirsty he would scoop some lake water for drinking and that he allowed this as a public health doctor! He said he would never drink the water now.
At a recent meeting, after a fairly dry presentation, Charlie raised his hand and stated “We need a limnologist. You know those are the people who study lakes. We need to know what is going on and what we can do.”
His deep concern for the lake has served as an inspiration for all our work. We will continue these efforts keeping him in mind and in our hearts.
His family has requested that memorial donations be made out to Friends of Deep Creek Lake, mail to 779 Chadderton School Rd, Oakland Maryland 21550 or use our easy donation button. These funds will be used for a special project in Charlie’s name.
