In the scientific literature, there are reports suggesting there are public health issues relating to dense populations of Canada Geese. The droppings of Canada Geese have found to carry some diseases of concern to humans, specifically the cryptosporidium, giardia, and toxoplasmosis.
At this point in early 2013 there is no water sampling program being developed or implemented focusing on the areas where the Canada Geese reside in the summer months and locations of resident populations of Geese. There are now firms which can do water quality sampling and determine if there are water quality impacts from the Canada Geese, as opposed to other sources.
It is unclear whether it is DNR which manages the lake, Maryland Department which is resposible for water quality or the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene should undertake such sampling.
