Grant Received from Civic Club

Friends of Deep Creek Lake recently received a small grant for the Garrett County Chapter of Civic Clubs. These funds will enable the organization to provide Tracer meters to individuals who volunteer to participate in the Marcellus Shale Water Monitoring project, led by DNR.

There are about 250 sites around the County which have been identified by DNR as locations needing weekly sampling for the coming years. These sites were identified as ones down stream from parcels which have been leased for Marcellus Shale drilling. It is critically important to obtain baseline water quality data prior to be beginning of any drilling. This data will be used to determine if there are any impacts to the streams after the drilling begins.

Friends of Deep Creek Lake is focusing on sampling in the lake watershed. We have three sites on Cherry Creek currently being sampled by Charles Lefebure. We have 4 more sites and need volunteers to commit to doing this work. Contact us to volunteer.

UPDATE (July 25 2012)
We have 2 new volunteers working on the Marcellus Shale Sampling! Jeff Nelson will be monitoring Shingle Camp Run, and Bob Marco will be monitoring a stream at the base of Wisp. They both received orientation from Christine King, and are ready to start monitoring before the end of July.
